FB2 practical week with the MSVÖ exam taken on site.
Video transcript

Translation of the original transcript (Deutsch).

Do you want to be a skipper and take responsibility for yourself and your boat? If your main residence is in Austria, the FB2 licence is your way into sailing at sea. Fahrtenbereich 2 means you may independently command a yacht of up to 24 metres, up to 20 nautical miles offshore, on any sea in the world. Everything you need for that, you get at IN2THEBLUE. In your FB2 practical week you learn everything you need for the exam. And not only that – also what you as a skipper need to watch for later on your own yacht, to be out there safely and responsibly. We go through all the important manoeuvres with you: coming alongside, entering the marina, berthing in a box, anchoring, picking up a mooring buoy, man overboard and, of course, a night passage. Right after your training week, the exam takes place. An examiner from the MSVÖ comes to us, and you show him on your own yacht what you can do. Straight afterwards you find out whether you will be sailing independently as a skipper in future. For your FB2 training you will find the right date on our website all year round. And of course further information on the exact prerequisites and the cost of the licence. Give us a call or send us a message. We are always happy to advise you personally.

Frequently Asked Questions about the FB2 Sailing Certificate

The FB2 (Coastal Area 2) legally qualifies you to independently skipper a yacht at sea – specifically in coastal areas up to 20 nautical miles offshore. It is the classic certificate for sailing trips in the Mediterranean, for example in Croatia. The practical exam is administered by the MSVÖ, the responsible Austrian examination association; you complete the training with us together with our partner Blue-2.at.

For admission to the MSVÖ exam, you need: residence in Austria, 400 nautical miles sailed, 2 night passages with night approach, a red-green vision test, a first aid course of over 16 hours, and the completed theoretical exam. The nautical miles sailed in advance are particularly crucial – you can find the exact requirements in the official MSVÖ document.

No problem: If you haven’t accumulated the 400 nautical miles yet, you can complete a training sailing trip with over 200 nautical miles with us to specifically collect miles. And if you are still missing night passages with night approach, we offer special night passage training for this. This way, you gradually meet the requirements for exam admission.

Yes, the theoretical exam must be completed before the practical exam. You can conveniently take the theory courses and exams online with our partner Blue-2.at. This way, you will be perfectly prepared for the practical week.

You will train everything you need to master as a skipper: seamanship and safety, mooring and unmooring maneuvers, anchoring, picking up and dropping off buoys, sailing maneuvers, reefing, rescue maneuvers under sail and engine, navigation and weather lore, as well as a night passage with night approach. You will sail in a crew of a maximum of 6 people, stay overnight on board, and cover approximately 150 nautical miles.

At the end of the training, you will take the practical exam, which is administered by the MSVÖ – a separate exam day is scheduled for this in the program. Our didactically highly trained instructors will accompany you step-by-step throughout the week until the exam.

In addition to the course price for the practical week including the exam, there are some incidental costs: the base fee (including tourist tax, diesel, cleaning), the MSVÖ examination fee, and the transit log. You can find the current prices on the course page or get them directly from us – so you have all cost items in view from the start.

Included are 6 days of practical training plus 1 exam day, overnight stay on board, and liability-insured trainers. Free extras: access to Skipper360.at, the digital edition of Ocean7 magazine, and attractive discounts for your next yacht charter.
