Course information

The RYA Day Skipper Theory course is designed for aspiring skippers and crew who want to build confidence in planning and navigating short coastal passages by day. It is the perfect theoretical preparation before joining the RYA Day Skipper Practical course at IN2THEBLUE.

You will learn how to read and use charts, plan passages, understand tides, interpret weather information and apply the international rules for preventing collisions at sea.

Certificate issuing criteria
Able to skipper a small yacht in familiar waters by day.

It is an online theory course that gives aspiring skippers and crew a solid foundation in navigation, pilotage, meteorology, tides, safety and seamanship. It is the perfect theoretical preparation before joining the RYA Day Skipper Practical course, and ideal for anyone who wants the confidence to plan and navigate short coastal passages by day.

Yes, it is a fully online, self-study course you can complete flexibly at your own pace from anywhere. You get access to an interactive learning platform together with instructor support, so you are never on your own with a tricky topic. You have 6 months of access to work through the material.

Plan for roughly 40 to 50 hours of learning time, which you can spread out however suits you. Because it is self-paced, you decide whether to work through it intensively over a few weeks or steadily over a longer period.

No – some basic sailing experience is helpful, but it is not mandatory. The course is built to take you from the ground up, so you can start even if you are still early in your sailing journey.

The course is delivered in English, in line with the international RYA standard. That way the terms and techniques you learn carry straight over to the practical course and to sailing worldwide.
