Frequently Asked Questions – RYA Day Skipper
The RYA Day Skipper is your first sailing licence and marks the step from crew member to skipper. Over one practical week you build the skills and confidence to take command of a small yacht on short passages under instruction, focusing on pilotage, boat handling, seamanship and navigation. It is ideal if you have already spent some time on board and now want to take charge yourself.
You should be at least 16 years old and bring roughly 100 miles logged on a yacht as an active crew member, along with 5 days on board and the theory course beforehand. If you are not quite there yet, get in touch – we will help you find the right way to get ready.
All our RYA courses are conducted in English, in cooperation with our RYA partner. That way you are comfortably prepared for the international, English-based RYA standard – from the theory right through to the exam.
It is a one-week practical course for a maximum of 5 students, run entirely on the water with accommodation on board. A qualified RYA instructor guides you through the full syllabus, and night sailing is scheduled flexibly depending on the weather and your learning progress. One thing to keep in mind: this is a training week rather than a cruising holiday, so please do not plan additional activities.
You work through the complete Day Skipper syllabus: preparation for sea, deck work, navigation and pilotage, meteorology, the rules of the road, maintenance and repair, engines, emergency situations, yacht handling under power and sail, passage making and night cruising. By the end you will be able to skipper a small yacht in familiar waters by day.
There is no separate assessment trip: the exam for the Day Skipper licence takes place on the final day of your practical training. Afterwards you also receive a qualified debrief on your progress, so you know exactly where you stand.
Included are the training fee, the boat charter, accommodation on board (including bed linen) and access to the Skipper360 learning platform. Not included are your personal gear and equipment, food and drinks, and the tourist tax plus base fee for diesel and cleaning. You will find the current prices on the course page or simply ask us.
The course runs at our RYA Training Centre in the Marina Punat on the island of Krk, Croatia – the same base as our charter fleet. You sail straight into the Kvarner Bay, a varied and rewarding area to learn in.
