Course Program
During this course you will be fine tuning existing skills rather than learning new ones.
This 5 day practical course is designed for a maximum of 4 Yachtmaster exam candidates and up to a total of 5 participants. Your crew might be students at Competent Crew level.
The course takes place on the water. Students are accommodated on board. A qualified RYA Yachtmaster Instructor will deliver the course content tailored to the needs of the participants.
Any training week will start with a general introduction and safety brief as well as an outlook over the week. Training in any other areas of the syllabus will be arranged flexibly according to the weather conditions and learning progress. Please do not plan additional activities.
Note that there are two different types of exams you can go for. The syllabus is the same for both.
Yachtmaster Coastal is expected to show understanding but may not have had the opportunity to practice all aspects of the syllabus under a range of different weather conditions
Yachtmaster Offshore is expected to show competence based on broad experience.
During and after the course you will get a qualified debrief about your progress, and advice about which exam you should go for. Or, what further training you should complete before putting yourself forward to the exam.
Certificate issuing criteria
The Yachtmaster Offshore is competent to skipper a yacht on any passage on which the yacht is no more than 150 miles from harbour.
The Yachtmaster Coastal has the knowledge needed to skipper a cruising yacht on costal passages (up to 60 miles from harbour) but does not necessarily have the experience to undertake longer passages.

Frequently Asked Questions – RYA Yachtmaster Prep Week
It is an intensive five-day preparation course for experienced sailors getting ready for the RYA Yachtmaster exam. Rather than learning new skills, you fine-tune what you already know, with hands-on coaching from a qualified RYA Yachtmaster Instructor in a small group. It is the ideal final step before you sit your exam.
This is a preparation course, not the exam. The Yachtmaster exam is taken separately with an external RYA examiner. The Prep Week gets you exam-ready: sharpening your skippering, closing any gaps and building the confidence to perform on the day.
You can prepare for two exam types, and the syllabus is the same for both. Yachtmaster Coastal suits candidates who understand the syllabus but have had less opportunity to practise every aspect in a range of conditions, while Yachtmaster Offshore is for more experienced skippers. The prerequisites differ by exam type, so check the relevant ones – we are happy to advise which fits you.
The exact prerequisites depend on whether you go for Coastal or Offshore, so please check the relevant list; a theory course beforehand is highly recommended. To the course, bring your certificates and proof of all prerequisites (sea time, nautical miles, first-aid course, etc.) and a passport photo.
All our RYA courses are conducted in English, in cooperation with our RYA partner – so your preparation matches the international RYA standard you will meet in the exam.
It is a five-day practical course on the water, with a maximum of 4 Yachtmaster exam candidates and up to 5 participants in total, accommodated on board. A qualified RYA Yachtmaster Instructor tailors the training to the group, starting with a general introduction and safety brief. Training is scheduled flexibly with the weather and your progress – please plan it as a focused training week, not a holiday.
You work on navigation, boat handling, man overboard, safety, meteorology, adverse weather, skippering ability and long passages. Included are the prep course itself, crews of up to 5, insured trainers, accommodation on board and access to the Skipper360 learning platform. Not included are your personal gear and equipment, food and drinks, the tourist tax plus base fee for diesel and cleaning, the RYA exam fees and the theory course.
The course runs at our RYA Training Centre in the Marina Punat on the island of Krk, Croatia. The varied waters of the Kvarner Bay are ideal for polishing the long passages, night work and boat handling your Yachtmaster exam will test.
