Course information

The RYA Yachtmaster Coastal / Offshore Theory course is aimed at experienced sailors who want to develop advanced navigation and passage planning skills for coastal and offshore sailing.

It builds on the knowledge gained in the Day Skipper course and brings you to the level required for the RYA Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore practical exams.

You will deepen your understanding of navigation techniques, weather systems, safety procedures and decision-making for longer and more complex passages.

Certificate issuing criteria
Able to plan and execute coastal and offshore passages, with a thorough understanding of advanced navigation, weather interpretation and passage making.

Next step: practical training

After completing your theory course, you can continue with advanced practical training such as the RYA Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster preparation courses. These focus on real-world passage making, offshore navigation and skipper decision-making under challenging conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions – RYA Yachtmaster Coastal / Offshore Theory

It is an advanced online navigation and theory course for experienced skippers progressing toward Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster certification. It takes your theoretical knowledge to the next level and prepares you for offshore passages. As a certified RYA Training Centre, IN2THEBLUE delivers the course in English.

It suits experienced sailors with Day Skipper-level knowledge who want to develop advanced navigation and offshore passage-planning skills. If you are working toward Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster, this is the theory step that supports that progression.

Knowledge at RYA Day Skipper level is required before you start, as the course builds on those foundations with more advanced material.

The course is online self-study with flexible pacing, so you can learn at your own speed. Plan for roughly 40 to 60 hours of study, and you typically have access to the online course for around 6 months.

You cover advanced navigation and chartwork, position fixing by GPS, radar and visual methods, course and passage planning, advanced tides and tidal streams, meteorology and weather systems, electronic navigation equipment, the COLREGs rules of the road, and safety procedures for offshore preparation.

Included are access to the online course, the online theory exam and assessment, official RYA training materials, navigation exercises and charts, instructor support, and the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal / Offshore Theory Certificate on completion.
