Course Program
This 5-day professional instructor training is the essential step for experienced skippers who want to move into teaching and deliver RYA courses at a recognised RYA Training Centre.
The Cruising Instructor qualification is the entry level for RYA instructors within the cruising scheme. If you compleate the course successfully, you are allowed to teach practical RYA courses up to Dayskipper level.
The course focuses not only on what you teach – but how you teach it. You will develop strong instructional techniques, structured session planning skills, and the confidence to run practical sailing courses professionally and safely.
You will actively teach sessions onboard and receive detailed feedback from the RYA Trainer.
Throughout the course you will work intensively on:
- Teaching methods and instructional techniques afloat
- Structuring and delivering practical sailing sessions
- RYA teaching standards and methodology
- Student management and safety awareness
- Effective communication and demonstration skills
- Giving and receiving constructive feedback
- Course organisation and professional responsibilities
This course is designed for:
Experienced Yachtmasters who want to start teaching RYA courses & Professional Yachtmaster skippers seeking to expand their teaching skills.
The Cruising Instructor qualification is mandatory if you wish to teach RYA Competent Crew and RYA Day Skipper practical courses.

Frequently Asked Questions – RYA Cruising Instructor Course
It is a 5-day professional instructor training that qualifies you to teach RYA Competent Crew and Day Skipper practical courses to Royal Yachting Association standards. As a certified RYA Training Centre, IN2THEBLUE runs the course in English with an RYA-approved trainer.
It is aimed at experienced Yachtmasters who want to start teaching RYA courses, as well as professional Yachtmaster skippers looking to expand their teaching skills. If you have strong practical sailing experience and want to move into instructing, this course is for you.
You need to be at least 18 years old, hold an RYA Yachtmaster certification with a Commercial Endorsement, and have an active RYA membership. Strong practical sailing experience and English language proficiency are also required, as the course is conducted in English.
Training covers teaching methods, structuring sessions, RYA standards, student management, safety protocols, communication, feedback techniques and professional responsibilities. You actively teach onboard sessions and receive detailed feedback from your trainer.
The course includes 5 days of training with an RYA-approved trainer, an RYA-approved training yacht, onboard accommodation with bedding, access to the Skipper360 learning platform, and liability insurance coverage. Crews are limited to 5 participants so you get plenty of hands-on teaching practice.
Excluded are personal equipment, food and beverages, tourist tax, base fees for diesel and cleaning, RYA exam fees and the theory course. Current prices are shown on the course page or available on request.
The course is run in Croatia, with IN2THEBLUE based in Marina Punat on the island of Krk, in partnership with Miles Ahead Sailing.
